The 156th General Commencement was held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 1 at the Jon M. Huntsman Center and honored nearly 9,000 graduates.

In 1850, amid rugged peaks and untamed valleys, our ascent began. Territorial leaders founded one of the American West's first universities—the University of Deseret, later renamed the University of Utah—in a landscape where survival itself was still uncertain.
