This webinar is an introduction to corpus linguistics as a tool for language teaching. Corpus linguistics uses computer-based tools to analyze large collections of authentic spoken and written texts in an efficient way. Pedagogical applications of corpora include, but are not limited to, 1. informing curricula, 2. designing syllabi, 3. informing textbooks, 4. creating teaching materials, and 5. developing tests. This session will specifically focus on using basic corpus linguistic tools to develop authentic classroom activities. The tools and techniques introduced in this workshop are applicable to any language. After this session you will be able to:
learn about valuable pedagogical applications of corpora.
check your intuitions about actual language use in different registers (e.g., academic language, informal conversation).
use basic corpus linguistic tools to inform your instruction and develop authentic teaching materials.
add freely-available online foreign language corpora to your teaching toolkit.
