This project collects and archives the stories of harm reduction pioneers in Massachusetts, who emerged in the mid-1980s in response to the devastating AIDS epidemic and its effect on people who used drugs. Using life history-
style interviews, we spoke with key figures in the movement, including street
workers, activists, researchers, public health officials, & physicians.
These individuals created opportunities and changed practice to improve the
treatment and care for people who use drugs or exist in other marginalized
spaces. In this presentation, we will share audio clips from our archive to
hear directly from those who have shaped harm reduction in Massachusetts and
across the country. April 4, 2023
